Klezmer Concert for Ukraine’s Children of War
Sunday, September 21
Main Line Unitarian Church, 816 S Valley Forge Rd Devon, PA 19333
The Klezmer Concert for Ukraine’s Children of War will place on Sunday, September 21st at 6pm at the Main Line Unitarian Church in Devon. The concert will feature the renowned Ukrainian ensemble, Kommuna Lux, formed in 2014 on the streets of Odesa. Since the war began, Kommuna Lux has become a cultural voice for Ukraine — raising funds and awareness while earning international accolades for their artistry.
As described in a recent feature story from the Jewish Exponent this interfaith and non-partisan event is sponsored by the Kaiserman JCC, the Main Line Unitarian Church and many others. The concert will be an opportunity to share in the healing power of joyous music while tangibly benefiting the suffering children of Ukraine.
The beneficiary of this life-affirming event is The Common Man for Ukraine, a volunteer-led charity created by the Rotary Club of Plymouth, NH. Since 2022, they’ve delivered over 4 and a half million pounds of food directly into the hands of children and families in safe houses and front-line villages throughout Ukraine. They use an all-volunteer network of trusted Rotary Club members from Poland and Ukraine to assure that the aid arrives safely into the hands of children who most need it. As shown in this compelling video, The Common Man for Ukraine also provides three-week residential trauma counseling retreats (in Poland) for Ukrainian children whose fathers have been killed in the war. So far, more than 1,300 orphans have attended these retreats. Register or make a donation

Rushnyky: Sacred Ukrainian Textiles Exhibition
Running through Sunday, November 16,
Glencairn Museum, 1001 Cathedral Rd, Bryn Athyn, PA, 19009
“A house without a rushnyk is not a home.” — Ukrainian proverb. While the word rusknyk can refer to an ordinary towel, the ceremonial rushnyk is distinct in its ornamentation and cultural significance. In almost any Ukrainian home, the family icons—and more recently, family photographs—would be draped with rushnyky, offering protection to the family, home, and village. These clothes appear in all family rituals: infants are wrapped in them at birth, and they play a central role in betrothal and wedding ceremonies. Remarkably, despite the turmoil of the 20th and 21st centuries, the rushnyk continues to be an integral part of Ukrainian culture. Glencairn Museum is proud to host this traveling exhibition from the Icon Museum and Study Center in Clinton, Massachusetts. Curated by Professor Franklin Sciacca, the exhibition features rushnyky and related artifacts from his collection.
