Financial Safety Starts with Awareness

Everyone deserves financial peace of mind. At UKRFCU, we’re here to help our members protect what they’ve worked hard to build so they can feel confident about their future. From unfamiliar emails to well-meaning relatives who may overstep, financial abuse can take many forms. But with the right knowledge and support, you can stay firmly in control.

Navigating Family Dynamics with Grace

Sometimes, financial abuse can come from those closest to us even unintentionally. Here’s how to protect yourself:

  • Set Boundaries Clearly: Only grant account access to individuals you trust completely, and ensure they understand your limits.
  • Use Joint Accounts Wisely: Consider separate accounts for personal spending and shared expenses.
  • Keep Records: If someone helps manage your finances, ask for receipts or regular updates.

An Extra Layer of Protection: Trusted Contact Program

UKRFCU now offers members the option to designate a Trusted Contact, a person we can reach out to if we notice unusual account activity or are unable to get in touch with you directly.

This individual does not have access to your account or financial information, but they can help us ensure your safety and provide support if concerns arise. The Trusted Contact Program is especially helpful for members who manage their finances independently, travel frequently, or may be more vulnerable to financial exploitation.

By adding a trusted contact, you’re taking a proactive step toward protecting your financial future with the peace of mind that someone you trust is just a call away.

Getting Started is Easy: You can add a trusted contact by visiting any UKRFCU branch or by contacting us directly. A simple form is all it takes to activate this valuable safeguard.

Spotting Scams Before They Strike

  • Scams targeting senior members often appear friendly and urgent. Protect yourself by staying alert:
  • Hang Up on Pressure: Legitimate institutions never demand immediate action or payment.
  • Don’t Share Personal Details: Keep your Social Security number, passwords, and PINs private.
  • Check Before You Click: Avoid opening unexpected email links or attachments.

If something feels off, trust your instincts. Call UKRFCU or someone you trust.

Tools That Keep You in Control

UKRFCU offers helpful resources designed with you in mind:

  • Account Alerts: Get notified of unusual activity right away.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication: Add an extra layer of protection to your login.
  • Secure In-Person Services: Our staff will verify your identity using your ID or driver’s license to ensure your account stays protected.
  • View Only Access: Stay in control while keeping others informed – grant view-only permissions to those you trust, right from Online Banking.

Literature and Trainings Available

At every UKRFCU branch location, we offer free, easy-to-understand literature from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) designed to help seniors recognize and avoid common scams. These pamphlets cover a wide range of topics from phone and email fraud to identity theft and are written in clear, accessible language. We encourage all members to not only pick up a copy for themselves but also to share this valuable information with friends, family, and caregivers. Empowering our community with knowledge is one of the most effective ways to prevent elder financial abuse. Here are a few helpful resources:

In addition to providing printed resources, UKRFCU is committed to community outreach and education. If your organization whether it’s a church group, community club, or business is interested in hosting a seminar, our representatives would be happy to provide a free training session. These seminars focus on practical steps seniors can take to protect their finances, recognize red flags, and report suspicious activity. Together, we can build a safer financial environment for our older adults.
